Tree Expert and Tree Care Operators Licensing Act of April 17, 2017
Pursuant to the "Tree Expert and Tree Care Operators Licensing Act of April 17, 2017" all New Jersey Tree Companies must hold an active New Jersey Tree Company (NJTC) license and addtionally have staffed either a Licensed Tree Care Operator (LTCO) or Licensed Tree Expert (LTE).
The aforementioned licenses may only be obtained via the New Jersey Board of Tree Experts (NJBTE), which was established by the State Legislature under the "Tree Expert Act of 1940" and operates under the New Jersey Department of Enviornmental Protection (NJDEP/EPA).
While ISA and TCIA offer industry credentials, these are not state licenses under the 2017 Licensing Act. Holders of these credentials must obtain the official Licensed Tree Care Operator (LTCO) credential via reciprocity (upon approval these credentials may then be recognized as equivalent to the LTCO License).
