Best Time of Season to Mulch

Mulch is best applied in the beginning of the growing season, which is usually mid to late spring and is often reapplied as necessary.

It is best to lay approximately 3 to 4 inches of mulch only, as excess mulch can smother the roots of trees ad promoted moisture buildup, which can lead to decay.

Initially mulch serves to warm the soil by helping it retain heat, which is lost during the night. This allows early seeding and encourages faster growth.

Mulch is applied to soil surfaces to conserve moisture, improve fertility of soil, reduce weed growth and to enhance the visual appeal of the area.
